How to Create a Domain Name (Web Address)

Many people have asked me, "How did you come up with your website name." This is not an easy answer. Creating a web address can be your key to success or failure. The reason you want an excellent name is MARKETING. Your name is what people will remember and the easier it is the more traffic you will receive and more traffic equals more money. In regular life this would be foot traffic. You need people to physically come past your store and you can calculate that if 100 people walk past your store you may get 3-4% of those people to come in and buy. Imagine this with your website. You have to get visitors. So you need to get your name out there. Think of a popular site that you remember because its so easy. I go to ABOUT.COM often because they have such good reference information. Look how easy it is to remember. These are the keys to creating a good domain name.

1. You want it to be easy to remember
2. It should have simple spelling
3. Choose popular words to increase your SEO. (Search Engine Optimization) This is how search engines find your website. See my next blog for a detail definition of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) You want a name that has key words in it so that you will have a better ranking on search engines like yahoo or google.
4. Don't make it too long. ( I need to take my own advice on that one) The longer the name is the more likely you are to have spelling errors and people may end up on someone else's site while looking for yours which could equal lost sales.

I like to choose more than one name when I am looking to build a website. First you may be thinking. I want to build a website but I have no idea what I want it to be about. For those of you at the very very beginning "the brain storming point", I would suggest to you that you start with a blog. Blogging is free and you can make money doing it. I highly recommend blogger.com. It is through google and it is easy to link to YouTube and Gmail (google mail which is also free). As you can see on my site I have links to advertisements. If you buy something from those ads then I make a commission. You can do the same thing with an account on blogger.com. Just sign up and off you go.


Back to the Domain names.....so if you are like my cousin Cynthia Dunbar, she designs beautiful jewelry. She may want to try to register a name like customjewelry.com or gemsbydesign.com or maybe cuteandclassy.com. I know another young lady who sells candles, soaps and other personal products that smell really awesome. She chose her website name to be http://www.divinedivafragrance.com/
This is also the name of her business. I am in the process of developing a site for ladies that wear large size shoes. So I have a site called www.ladieswithbigfeet.com you can go see it while it is being developed. I hope you are understanding how this works. You can be more particular about your domain name by doing a key word search first to see which words are most popular on the web. If you are not sure what search terms to bid on? Picking your domain name is fun. I suggest you start off with about 6-10 names that you really like then search to see if they are available. Have your credit card ready.
